Whitecape

3 DEC - 7 DEC 2012. The Little Gallery, Department of Art University of Calgary

When we see the landscape, we can never see the entire scene at once. We only see the section and the rest we can only imagine. My work becomes not only a window of looking out the landscape but also a veil to hide the scene from its entireness. What interests me is not the realistic depictions or descriptions but atmosphere and mood of the place. There series of painting in “whitescape” suggest misty, foggy, and mysterious winter landscapes that enable the viewers to focus on what they sense rather than what they see. The interplay between layers of colours and washes also suggest subtle, ambiguous landscape.

Andante: The Spirit of Prairies

My practice focuses on the painting of landscapes inspired from Western Canadian prairies, exploring the experience of vastness and emptiness of the parries as a metaphor for unknown potentiality of life and its possibilities. The stillness of prairies evokes the impression of slow rhythm which relates to the work andante in the title. Andante refers to a slow tempo of perceiving, usually at a walking pace. It enables the viewers to visually experience and explore many impression and versions of the prairies in a meditative manner.

In my work, the prairies become an ideal space to evoke the spirit of place rather than a record of geographical depiction of the place. My connection with the prairies is established through the mind and subjective perception, sensation and contemplation.

Landscape

2012-2014

In this series of landscape paintings, I experiment with acrylic washes to represent landscapes by focusing on colour and atmosphere of the place. The topographical feature of the season is subtle but still recognizable. However, it does not specifically describe a specific location. The place is imaginary and invented yet suggests tranquil and serene landscapes of the season.
